2 cups broccoli, (one broccoli crown with 3 - 4 inches of stem) 1/4 cup raw sunflower or pumpkin seeds 1/4 cup raisins (or other dried fruit) 2 teaspoons olive oil 2 teaspoons lemon juice 2 teaspoons soy sauce
Put the broccoli in the food processor with the seeds and raisins. Process just a few seconds to break up the broccoli. Add the liquids and pulse to mix it up. Be careful you don't make it too fine. Check for taste.

"Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." Luke 23:34. "Then he fell on his knees and cried out, 'Lord do not hold this sin against them.'" Acts 7:60.
I recently read a commentary, (sorry, I don't know where) that said the reason for Jesus' statement above was that the people were not acting on their own, it was the devil acting through them. The second quote is from Stephen, when he was being stoned. It sounds like he, too, knows that it is the devil working in those who are stoning him.
We aren't facing death the way Jesus and Stephen were, but daily, we face situations where people are "doing things to us". Things like cutting us off on the freeway, being rude to us in the checkout line at the market, ignoring us when we need help. I think, if we look at the attitude that Jesus and Stephen took, that it was the devil that made them do it, and transfer that to the people that are iritating us, we can be a little more patient and forgiving. Back off, mentally at least, and ask God to give you peace and patience, and to forgive that other guy. Be blessed by asking for blessing for others.

"Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them. To one he gave five bags of money, two bags of gold to another, and one bag of gold to the last---dividing it in proportion to their abilities---and then left on his trip." Matt 25:14.
We know the rest of the story. The men with 5 bags and 2 bags utilized the abilities that they had and made more money. But the man with only one bag just hid it. He did nothing with it, and was punished because of that.
Recently, when I read this, the word ability jumped out at me. We all have abilities that God has given us. In my case, I have been blessed with many abilities. But, we are taught not to be proud. Pride goeth before the fall. We must be humble. But we also must acknowledge our gifts, our abilities. Proud, I think, is thinking and acting like our abilities are something that we did. Yeah, our part is strengthening the abilities, but God gave them to us in the first place. And we all have abilities, some more than others. But it is not humble to not use our abilities. It is humble to use them and to give all the glory for the results to God.
To God be the glory! Acknowledge those abilities! Throw back your shoulders, stand up straight, and use all the gifts that God has given you. Old or young, we have abilities that will glorify God. Use them. |

"If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me." Mark 8:34
We live in a world where everything is centered on me and what I want and how fast can I get it. Instant gratification. No one wants to wait for anything. And, if by chance we are willing to wait, we have friends who think we are foolish for waiting.
Let me tell you what happened about a week ago.
One of the students in the Meet God in the Kitchen brought us some pumpkin seed crackers. My, they were delicious! And, like many, I didn't wait. I ate them on the way home. All but the crumbs. But, by the time I got home, I felt crummy! Those seeds sat in my tummy like a ton of bricks. And I should have known better. After all, I am the teacher. (Ha! A lot I know, hun?) But I am just as greedy and as much of a glutton as the next guy.
But it got me thinking. And I decided to not eat until I got hungry. That was Thursday night. Friday went by and I was fine. I drank lots of water. Saturday morning, I was fine. After prayer meeting, I was still fine. But someone had saved me some special salad. So I ate it, and some of this and some of that, and a little of . . . Well, you get the idea.
And then I remembered the verse at the top of the page. What "denying" am I doing? Not much. And we are in the end times. And in the time of trouble things are not going to be easy. And if I can't even wait until I'm hungry to eat, how easily will it be to tempt me when things are tough. So, my goal this week is to wait until I'm hungry for my next meal, and not eat enough so that I won't get hungry before the next meal. I'm going to try to plan to be hungry for at least an hour before I eat a scheduled meal. I'll let you know next week.

zucchini white onion bell pepper tomatoes cucumber radishes avocado jalapeno pepper cilantro corn cut off the cob cooked garbanzo beans baked potato baked sweet pototo
You can mix as many of these ingredients together in whatever amounts and combinations please your appetite and your stuff on hand. The potatoes and or garbanzo beans are for the times you really are hungry! Or for the times you are feeding the family and want something lighter for yourself.
Mix it well and pile it on a plate and use one or both of the following dressings. I usually put one on each half of the plate.
Green Dressing
2 cups chopped zucchini 1/2 avocado lemon juice salt
Blend together.
This is mild flavored. If the salad is mild also you might want to add some jalapeno or onion.
Red Dressing
2 red bell peppers 1/2 white onion lemon juice salt
Blend. This is watery. You can add clear jell. I usually add some chia to soak up the juice.

Pipian is sort of like mole in texture and use. It also has one main ingredient in common: dried chilis. Mole, however, has chocolate and pipian has pumpkin seeds. They are both used as a sauce, typically, for chicken. And they are cooked. Not this recipe. I don't cook it, so it is ready when the chilis are soaked. I have used it as a dip, as a sauce and as a salad dressing. (Not to mention, a filling for a spoon.)
2 Ancho chilis 1/2 cup pumpkin seeds 2 cloves garlic 2 T chopped cilantro 1 jalapeno 1 medium white onion 2 limes, juice only
Cut the chilies open and remove the seeds. Keep the seeds and grind them in the blender (or coffee grinder) with the pumpkin seeds. Put the chilies in water to rehydrate.
Put the pumpkin seed/chili seed powder in a bowl and set aside. Blend the rest of the ingredients. Add the rehydrated chilies, then the seed powder. Add soak water to get it thin enough to blend.
Taste this. It has a zing, but not too bad!
The real Pipian sample that I had was not raw. The chilies and the pumpkin seeds had been roasted. So I roasted and additional 1/2 cup of seeds and added them to a little more than 1/2 the original mixture. It diluted the "heat" and I thought it sort of tasted chocolaty after a couple of days.
My friends at work liked it, especially the spicier one.
